The Basilica of the Mother of Mercy in Maribor is one of the seven basilicas in Slovenia and is the Home Church of the Franciscan Monastery of Maribor. The present-day church with a monastery was built from 1892 to 1900 and stands on the site of a former Capuchin church, built in the 17th century. Due to the increasing number of pilgrims, the church became too small.
The basilica was originally entirely painted on the model of 11th and 12th century wall painting. The Franciscans rebuilt the church after World War II, leaving only a minority of frescoes today. These include a portrayal of a triumphal arch depicting Mary, seated on a throne with Jesus in her lap. It is surrounded by a choir of angels.
