The Old Vine House

The oldest growing vine in the world as listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, “Stara trta” grows on the Drava river banks in the center of the Maribor. It is as the oldest among all the vines in the world and protected as a cultural monument of local importance.

For 450-years it decorates the front of the “Old Vine House” the historic one-story house. It’s branches spread horizontally across the house, reaching up to 15m. It is characterized by extreme disease resistance, long lifespan and rich fertility. It has lived through the battles of Middle Ages defying parasites and humans and still offers unique vine variety known as Žametovka or Modra kavčina.

The Old Vine House welcomes visitors to taste top-quality wines from the region. Guided tours are available for those wanting to learn more about the  rich wine heritage.
